Great British Beef Week - championing quality beef
Circled on the calendar for some months has been an annual favourite national foodie week of ours here at Simply: Great British Beef Week (GBBW). Organised by Ladies in Beef, it is an opportunity to champion the versatility and taste of one of our favourite ingredients... beef.
This year’s GBBW – which runs from the 23rd - 30th April - is something of a special celebratory year as it is the tenth anniversary, a fantastic milestone for the Ladies In Beef to reach, with or without a global pandemic!
Great British Beef Week 2020 from home
I’m writing this blog, from home, three weeks into the UK’s COVID-19 lockdown. Daily life has, for now, changed. Although it feels like supermarket shelves are filling up again, feeding our household well seems like a more calculated matter than ever before.
There’s no more popping to the shop for forgotten items or picking up a takeaway on the way home from work and eating in is definitely the new eating out.
For Ladies in Beef and Great British Beef Week the focus has moved away from the PR launch events and dinners with celebrity chefs and restaurant promotions. Instead they hope to promote their work in the media to reassure you that farmers are working hard to put food on your tables.
They’ll also be working with social media influencers to spread the word about easy and delicious beef dishes (look out for #GBBW2020 on your feeds!). In particular dishes made with different beef cuts, with ingredients that can be easily swapped out and simple meals perfect for batch cooking and freezing. We think that’s definitely still worth celebrating.
So, we’re joining in with showcasing some of our heart-warming recipes that we think you’ll be tempted by. Maybe try our mouth-watering Steak Sandwich with a Spicy Relish or a comforting Creamy Beef and Mustard Pasta. We hope you enjoy.
What to cook with Thin Cut Steaks
These thin cuts can come from a variety of cuts and are butchered to be around 5-7mm thick. They only take 2-3 minutes to cook on each side and are an ideal choice for quick meals like stir-fries, fajitas and salads.
For a #SteakNight special I would suggest tucking in to our ultimate Steak Sandwich with a Spicy Relish, it is a taste-bud winner! Our Speedy Beef Curry is great if you're missing picking up your go-to Indian Takeaway. And perfect for springtime dish, why not try our Creamy Beef and Mustard Pasta?
Brisket of Beef for hassle-free slow-cooking
Pulled beef brisket dishes are ever increasingly found on restaurant menus - and rightfully so! More popular than ever, when cooked low and slow the meat becomes tender and is packed full of flavour.
Our Low and Slow Shredded Beef Brisket, which uses Bourbon whiskey for an optional extra kick, takes its time to cook but you can just leave it to do its thang - and trust us, it will be so worth the wait.
What to cook with Beef Shin
Beef shin might not be your first go-to beef cut, but this well flavoured cut from the leg (sold both bone-in and boneless) shouldn’t be overlooked. It gives a beautiful rich beef flavour to casseroles and is another cut that benefits from being cooked slowly. That’s why it’s our cut of choice for comforting beef classics like Easy Beef Casserole with Herb Dumplings and Beef, Beer and Chestnut Pot Pies.
Mince is such a versatile ingredient
We have masses of lamb and beef mince recipes on this website alone! Hands up though who just sticks to spag bol? Try our traditional Cottage Pie with Bubble and Squeak (a great recipe for using up leftover veg too) or burgers with a twist – Kiev Beef Burgers.
